Eating Disorder Foundation of Orange County Raises Nearly $6,000 For Eating Disorder Prevention and Awareness Programs
Laguna Beach, CA (PRWEB) October 20, 2006 -- The Eating Disorder Foundation of Orange County hosted the 1st Annual Family Fun Hike on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006, raising nearly $6,000 for future eating disorder awareness and prevention programs. The event, which included typical beautiful Southern California weather, drew nearly 70 hikers who participated in an easy hike throughout Crystal Cove State Park. The Foundation raised funds with event ticket sales, sponsorships and raffles.
“We’re thrilled with the success of our first large fundraising event,” said Nicole Bourquin, Executive Director of EDFOC. “The funds raised will allow us to continue to fulfill our mission of educating young athletes, school children, and parents about the dangers, signs and prevention of eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia.”
The Eating Disorder Foundation of Orange County is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing prevention efforts, early detection, and education for our community on the realities of eating disorders. Eating disorders are conditions that cause a person to spend most of their waking hours thinking and obsessing about food, weight, calories, and/or body image. These obsessions may cause them to binge eat, starve themselves, or binge and purge.
10-15% of all Americans suffer from some type of eating disorder. These illnesses can last anywhere from 5-15 years or more. The longer the duration of the illness, the greater chance of death or severe, irreversible medical consequences. Eating disorders are progressive and can result in serious mental and physical illness and/or death. According to the National Eating Disorders Association, for females between fifteen to twenty-four years old who suffer from anorexia nervosa, the mortality rate associated with the illness is twelve times higher than the death rate of all other causes of death.
Funds raised from the Family Fun Hike will help the Foundation continue to offer free presentations and resource referrals to local schools, parent groups, athletic organizations, and professional groups interested in preventing and detecting eating disorders. Programs already developed and implemented by EDFOC include “Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies,” a curriculum developed specifically for Orange County schools. The Eating Disorder Foundation of Orange County also offers programs that provide funds for those who cannot afford the treatment they desperately need to begin their recovery.

Eating Disorders and the Narcissist
Patients suffering from eating disorders binge on food and sometimes are both anorectic and bulimic. This is an impulsive behaviour as defined by the DSM (particularly in the case of BPD and to a lesser extent of Cluster B disorders in general).
Treatment for Eating Disorders
There are many reasons why people with an eating disorder are reluctant to actually get treatment for eating disorders. For one thing, actually getting help means admitting that they have a problem. After all, if they are seeking help, that must mean there's something wrong with them. A lot of them are psychologically fragile or damaged, and this is difficult for many people with eating disorders. In some cases, the victim is thoroughly convinced that there really is no problem, and it's even harder to convince the victim to get help.
Recognizing the Symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa
Each year, thousands of women suffer from one form of harmful eating disorder or another. The causes of them are many including depression, broken family relationships, and even the media's obsession about weight. No matter what the cause, eating disorders can be extremely dangerous and can often lead to death.

Life Altering Addiction And Eating Disorder Counseling
Nowadays one can find many programs offering residential treatment for eating disorder. These are often similar to the residential treatment for addiction. Addiction and eating disorders have many similarities between them. Since this is unhealthy, they require addiction and eating disorder counseling. The human brain basically has individual reward centers. These are activated when a person is cared for and feels well. Also, if the person takes care of the body or receives praise, the centers are rewarded. However, these reward centers can also be stimulated by artificial methods. Drugs, alcohol, and excessive food all stimulate the centers. Apart from this, they block out unpleasant feelings.
