Nation's Leading Eating Disorder Treatment Center Launches New Program for Boys
Phoenix (PRWEB) October 9, 2008 -- Remuda Programs for Eating Disorders (http://www.remudaranch.com), the nation's leading eating disorder treatment center, today announced it has opened Reddstone, a Remuda Program for Boys (http://www.remudaranch.com/reddstone). The intensive, inpatient program will treat boys 17 and under who are struggling with anorexia, bulimia and binge-eating disorder. It will follow the Remuda Model of Treatment that is based on a bio-psycho-social-spiritual framework. The program doesn't just treat the disorder; it treats the entire patient and offers them the best possible chance for complete and lasting recovery from eating disorders.
Research suggests that 1 in 4 pre-teen cases of anorexia are male. There are thousands of males with eating disorders in our society. Historically, it was thought that the ratio of boys to girls with eating disorders was 1:10, but it's actually closer to 1:6.
"Over the past 10 years, the male body has come under much scrutiny, much like the female body has for decades," said Sam Lample, assistant clinical director for the Reddstone Program for Boys. "Boys see images in the media and are inundated with the message that they need to look that way or they're inadequate."
Boys remain in treatment for 60 days - a minimum amount of time required for eating disorder behaviors to stop and new skills to be acquired. Each boy will have a team of professionals, who not only treat the eating disorder, but address co-occurring issues such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse or trauma.
"Reaching out to boys is the next logical step for Remuda," adds Lample. "We have been asked for years if we treat boys and until now, we haven't. Reddstone will use the proven Remuda Model of Treatment (http://www.remudaranch.com/general/outcomes) to reach an often overlooked population."
Since 1990, Remuda (http://www.remudaranch.com/general/information/index.php) has provided care to nearly 9,000 patients with eating disorders. Ninety-five percent of Remuda's patients are in good recovery one, five and ten years after leaving the program. They no longer have a diagnosable eating disorder, their personal relationships have improved and they're functioning more effectively in school and work.

Treatment for Eating Disorders
There are many reasons why people with an eating disorder are reluctant to actually get treatment for eating disorders. For one thing, actually getting help means admitting that they have a problem. After all, if they are seeking help, that must mean there's something wrong with them. A lot of them are psychologically fragile or damaged, and this is difficult for many people with eating disorders. In some cases, the victim is thoroughly convinced that there really is no problem, and it's even harder to convince the victim to get help.
The Danger in Delayed Diagnosis of Eating Disorders in Children
There is a great danger in delayed diagnosis of eating disorders in children, primarily because people do not think of children as being old enough to have an eating disorder. A lot of the time, eating disorders occur in adolescents, because their hormones are turning on and they are having a tough time dealing with new changes to their bodies and peer pressure, and in adults who are struggling with their weight. The unfortunate truth is, most diagnoses of eating disorders in children don't come until their condition is life-threatening.
Combatting Eating Disorders

In order to identify and correct problems become they become too severe, it is important to be aware of the lasting effects of eating disorders. America's Children Are Dying To Lose Weight
Wasting away, Katie died weighing only 58 pounds. And she was sixteen. That just doesn't seem possible to me when I look at my seven-year-old daughter who weighs in at about 55 pounds. Anorexia is a medical enigma. Although there is little concrete evidence of what actually causes anorexia, most experts agree that there are several contributing risk factors. We believe that awareness of these risk factors can reduce the odds that they will be triggered so we are hopeful that this information will save lives.
